Custom Orders

Custom work is welcomed at Stone County Art. Memorial markers or benches can be customized as a loving reminder of someone who has passed on. Sculptures can incorporate special miscellaneous objects that have been collected. Mosaic Lazy Susans to match outdoor or indoor dining furniture can be created. Jokes are always great fun as a custom order.

The Duckmaster

The name of this piece is The Duckmaster, and is an example of a sculpture of a private joke. My long time friend Susan had flown in to see me from L.A. After I picked her up at theLittle Rock Airport, I drove her to the River Market area to stretch her legs before beginning the long 2 hour trip to our place. We strolled into the Peabody Hotel just in time for the famous Duck Walk. The Duck Walk is a feature of both the Peabody Hotels in Memphis and now Little Rock. Ducks are trained to one by one strut into the ornate hotel lobby on a red carpet at the same time every morning, swim around in the fountain during the day, and then one by one strut out of the lobby – via the same red carpet–at the same time every evening. Even big city Susan was pretty impressed by this display, so we asked a uniformed hotel employee by the fountain if he could tell us anything about the ducks. Yes, he could, he informed us with confidence: he was The Duck Master. Then this young man went on to tell us not only about the ducks themselves, but how being The Duck Master had been a lifelong dream of his, how he had sought out the position, been trained for 2 weeks in Orlando and so forth. After he left to attend to his Duck Duties, Susan looked at me and said quietly yet firmly: "I've got to lower my standards." She was right: the Duck Master had more serenity, more profound contentment with his life than both of us combined will probably ever have. He absolutely radiated a fervent sense of deep well-being. And from then on for the rest of our week road trip together, the Duck Master became our joke as we repeatedly listened for his guidance and channeled his wisdom ("The Duck Master has indicated to me we need to stop for beer and Chee-tos.") The sculpture shows Susan and I bowing to the Holy Grotto of the Duckmaster in front of a tile that says "In His Service Always."
