Bibliographic Information and Education

Lee Cowan arrived in Arkansas with her family when she was one year old in 1949. College in 1966 provided the first opportunity for her to leave the state, and she traveled extensively, both nationally and internationally, before returning to Arkansas in the mid 70’s. In 1998, she and her husband left their professional careers in Little Rock to move deep into the Ozark Mountains.

Cowan’s formal education is not in art:  she holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work, with which she practiced psychotherapy for almost 20 years. Believing from childhood that she had not a single artistic bone in her body, she was thrilled with the multitude of ideas, images, and forms that came flowing through her hands when she took her first pottery class at the Arkansas Arts Center in the early 1990’s. Hooked on three-dimensional work, she continued to take every clay and sculpture class she could manage at the Art Center while living in Little Rock, appreciating especially the permission to experiment given by instructor Angela Cummings. Since moving to Stone County, she has continued to take advantage of workshop offerings by various individuals and groups, including author and sculptor Sherri Warner Hunter in Tennessee. During 2008, Cowan returned part-time to Little Rock to enjoy once again the opportunities available at the Arkansas Art Center.
